The Measurement of Loudness

چکیده
This paper reviews the available evidence (published and unpublished) on the relation between loudness and stimulus intensity. The e. vidence suggests that for the typical listener the loudness L of a 1000-cycle tone can be approximated by a power function of intensity I, of which the exponent is log•02. The equation is: L--kI ø.a. Intensity here is assumed to be proportional to the square of the sound pressure. In terms of sones, where 1 sone is the loudness produced by a tone at 40 db above the standard reference level, the equation for loudness L as a function of the number of decibels N becomes' logL=0.03N--1.2. Otherwise said, a loudness ratio of 2:1 is produced by a pair of stimuli that differ by 10 db, and this relation appears to hold over the entire range of audible intensities. At low levels of intensity, the loudness of white noise grows more rapidly than the loudness of a 1000-cycle tone, but above the level of approximately 50 db the two loudnesses remain more nearly proportional. The suggestion is made that for all levels greater than 50 db the loudness of continuous noises may be calculated from the equation: logL=O.O3N-t--S, where $ is a spectrum parameter to be determined empirically.

Loudness Measurement and Control
Sudden changes in loudness because of loud commercials and variations in loudness levels between programs have been a major source of nuisance for the consumers. With the transition to Digital TV, loudness related issues have not only continued but are on the rise. Traditional techniques of loudness measurement are ineffective for digital broadcast. Techniques for digital broadcast need to be o...

ABSTRACT- Noise is considered as one of the most debilitating conditions in farming operations. In this study, a number of factors affecting the noise generated by Sampo 3065 combine harvesters were evaluated. Factors were engine speed and gear ratio for combines with and without original cabins. A factorial experiment arranged as a completely randomized design with four replicates was used. Re...
متن کاملThe Effect of Vocal Loudness on Nasalance of Vowels in Persian Adults
Objectives: Nasality is one of the important parameters in pathology of voice resonance. Voice of normal adults has nasality to some extent. It appears that nasality, like other parameters of voice, can be affected by loudness which can be measured in experimental evaluations. This study was conducted to determine the effect of vocal loudness on nasalance of vowels in normal adults and to ident...

Introduction: The noise could affect some aspects of human health, including the cognitive performance. In addition to sound pressure level and exposure time, the psychoacoustic features of noise may cause destructive effects on humans. A few recent studies have been conducted on effect of sound quality on cognitive performance. This study aims to find the noise loudness and sharpness levels as...
متن کاملInvestigating the effect of personality traits on sensitivity, annoyance and loudness perception due to exposure to high frequency noise
Introduction: Although noise characteristics such as intensity and frequency are the main cause of detrimental effects, it is important to pay attention to the personality traits of individuals as the host of adverse health effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of personality traits on sensitivity, annoyance and loudness perception due to exposure to high frequency sound....

Introduction: Tinnitus is a perception of sound without external source. The exact etiology of tinnitus is not fully understood, although some researchers believe that the condition usually starts in the cochlea. The aim of this study was to determine the potential contribution of outer hair cell dysfunction to chronic tinnitus, by application of Distortion-Product Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (...
